The district
What Karon is like to live in
Karon Beach is one of the longest on Phuket: a straight, wide stretch of sand facing west, with a promenade and a road behind it rather than a wall of hotels. The beach is swimmable most of the year; from May to October the surf gets strong and the red flags go up, as everywhere on the west coast.
Behind the beach is Karon village — a proper grid of streets with a fresh market, a temple, a school, pharmacies, small restaurants and long-term residents from Thailand, Europe and Russia. It is quieter than Patong, 5.3 km to the north, and more built-up than Kata Noi to the south.
Kata, 3.1 km away, adds a second beach, more restaurants and the viewpoint road to the Big Buddha. Phuket Old Town is 11.0 km away in a straight line, about forty minutes by car; the airport is 29.3 km, over an hour by road in season.
